Man Killed in Port Arthur Refinery Accident

Thomas Courts, 66, of Denton, died early Saturday morning at a Texas refinery when the bulldozer he was operating fell into a pit filled with 200-degree wastewater.

About the Accident

According to NBC 5, the accident happened early Saturday morning at the Total facility in Port Arthur.

The victim was most likely pushing byproducts into the pit with the bulldozer when the bulldozer went over the levee.

A co-worker attempted to use machine to pull the bulldozer from the pit; however, Courts, was already dead.

  • 4,585 people were killed on the job in 2013. This averages to 88 deaths per week or more than 12 deaths every day.
  • 4,101 of those deaths occurred in private industry and 828 were associated with construction accidents.

    • Electrocutions
    • Caught-in/between
