Police Continue Search for Hit-and-Run Motorist

The San Antonio Express-News reports that Wright, 33, died Monday after being struck by a pickup truck along Interstate 10 in eastern San Antonio.

It appears that Wright was attempting to cross the eastbound traffic lanes from North to South when he was hit – the driver did not stop.

Wright suffered severe trauma to his head and face and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police are currently searching for a black pickup. The driver will face a charge of failure to stop and render aid, causing death upon being found.

Pedestrian Accidents Statistics and Safety Tips

  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 4,743 people lost their lives in pedestrian accidents in 2012 – up from 4,457 in 2011.
  • Another 76,000 pedestrians suffered injury, up 10 percent from the 69,000 reported injured in 2011.
  • The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) urges all pedestrians to cross streets at designated crossing areas or intersections whenever possible.
  • Pedestrians should also keep to the sidewalk or designated walking areas whenever possible. In the absence of such a designated walking area, pedestrians should walk facing traffic.
  • At night, pedestrians should wear reflective clothing or carry a flashlight to increase their visibility and reduce the risk of an accident.
