Man Killed in Train Accident at Crossing

A man was fatally struck by a train in Burlingame, causing major delays for Caltrain, Monday morning.

About the Fatal Accident

According to CBS SF Bay Area, the man was struck by Caltrain No. 305 around 6:30 a.m. at the Oak Grove Avenue crossing.

The pedestrian was on the track, causing a strong collision. This is the sixth accident on Caltrain’s right-of-way in 2016.

All of the trains stopped in the area after the accident, causing delays from 60 to 90 minutes.

SamTrans buses took passengers between Caltrain stops at Millbrae, Burlingame and San Mateo, and BART buses accepted mutual aid at its Milbrae Station according to CBS SF Bay Area.

The following information was provided by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA):

  • In 2015, 2,509 accidents occurred at railroad accidents killing 244 people and injuring 967.
  • Half of all railroad crossing accidents occurred within five miles of the motorists’ homes.
  • A motorist is roughly 20 times more likely to die in an accident involving a train than a crash involving a passenger vehicle.
