Details about the Pedestrian Accident in Midtown

The New York Daily News is reporting that an accomplished jeweler from Manhattan was hit and killed by a livery cab while walking in Midtown on Monday morning. Good Samaritans rushed to the aid of the jeweler, but the woman died, according to police.

77-year-old Carol Dauplaise was walking with a cart near the intersection of Madison Avenue and East 26th Street – just five blocks away from her home – when she was hit by a 2013 Toyota Camry at about 8:35 a.m., according to witnesses and authorities.

A witness of the accident, 46-year-old Rony Damestoir told police he was driving down E. 26h Street in front of the cab driver when he saw the driver of the cab turn right onto Madison and hit the victim.

The witness pulled over to see if he could help and saw the woman already underneath the car. The witness and several other people at the scene of the accident realized that the only thing they could do to save the woman was to life the vehicle over her.

Paramedics and emergency crews arrived soon after the accident and realized the victim was in cardiac arrest. They took the victim to the Bellevue Hospital, but doctors were unable to save her.

The driver of the cab, Buddhi Gurung, did remain at the scene of the accident and was charged by police with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care.
