Mapaville State School Bus Crash

According to KSDK 5, six people sustained minor injuries after an accident involving a school bus in Jefferson County, Missouri.

Details of the Bus Accident

Authorities say the driver of a Mapaville State School bus hit a slick spot on the road and lost control causing the bus to tip over. The accident happened on Highway Z at Persimmon Point Drive between Pevely and Mapaville, MO.

Six people were on board at the time of the accident, including the four students between the ages of 12 and 18, the bus driver and one adult attendant. All of the occupants were treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital. The four students were wearing seat belts and seated in wheelchairs when the accident occurred.

School Bus Accident Statistics

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tracks school-transportation-related crashes and defines them as “a crash that involves, either directly or indirectly, a school bus body vehicle, or a non-school bus functioning as a school bus.”

NHTSA estimates 1,222 fatal school transportation-related accidents to have taken place between 2003 and 2012 accounting for 0.35% of all fatal motor vehicle accidents. On average, 135 fatalities each year are attributed to school-transportation-crashes. Almost half of all fatal crashes involved impact to the front of the school transportation vehicle.
