Maserati Recalls 28,235 Luxury Cars for Unintended Acceleration

Maserati, an Italian luxury brand, is recalling 2014-2016 model-year Quattroporte and Ghibli luxury sedan.

About the Maserati Recall

According to USA Today, Maserati is recalling these cars for unintended acceleration. The company believes it is due to the floor mats that can slide under the gas pedal and jam against the floorboards causing unintentional acceleration.

Maserati said in a filling to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it had opened an investigation in response to four instances that were reported.

Details on the Investigation

The first analysis of the problem was performed mid-February of 2015 following a report of a pedal entrapment issue. The floor mat on the driver’s side was not properly attached and/or had broken anchors, which lead to the mat to slide forward toward the accelerator pedal.

Maserati claims all the affected cars have a brake-override feature. The brake-override feature causes the engine to disengage acceleration if multiple pushes on the pedal is detected.

In the four instances reported, the brake-override system disabled acceleration in these events with no accidents or injuries reported.
