A 2-year-old boy is in stable condition after falling from a second-story window of an apartment in Boston’s Mattapan neighborhood.

Window Fall Investigated as Accident

According to WCVB, the incident occurred at 154 Morton St. just before 5 pm Sunday evening.

One official stated the accident was witnessed by a pedestrian who was then able to flag down an ambulance as it was driving by.

The child was then transported to Boston Children’s Hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

Child Window Fall Statistics

According to a study published in the journal Pediatrics:

  • Between 1990 and 2008, 98,415 children were treated in U.S. emergency rooms for injuries sustained after falling through a window. This averages to more than 5,000 E.R. visits every year.
  • 28 percent of those visits required an extended hospital stay, and the majority of children injured in such accidents were under the age of four.
  • Every year, 15 to 20 children die from injuries sustained after falling through a window.
  • Children’s Hospital Colorado warns that a fall of only 10 feet can result in spinal injuries, traumatic head injuries, paralysis, and death.
