Memorial Planned for Military Family Killed in Trucking Accident

A memorial has been planned for a Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier and his family, all of whom were killed in a trucking accident in north Texas on Sunday.

Details of the Fatal Trucking Accident

According to reports, a tractor-trailer crossed into oncoming traffic on Interstate 40 in north Texas hitting the family's vehicle. The incident occurred around 7:15 pm Sunday.

Victims of the accident included Sgt. Brandon Cummings, his wife Vanessa, and their 10-month-old son. They were residents Lakewood, Washington.

The driver of the tractor-trailer that killed them was Jorge Alberto Contreras. 

Cummings had previously served in Afghanistan and at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and was a military police officer assigned to JBLM's 593rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command.

Vanessa Cummings was a military veteran. 

Trucking Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • 3,921 people were killed in trucking accidents in 2012, marking a 4-percent increase from the 3,781 deaths recorded in 2011.
  • Of those killed in trucking accidents:
    • 73 percent were occupants of passenger vehicles
    • 8 percent were occupants of large trucks
    • 10 percent were non-occupants such as bicyclists and pedestrians
  • An additional 104,000 people were injured in auto accidents up 18 percent from the 88,000 injuries recorded in 2011.
