Michelin Issues Recall for 1.2 Million Tires Sold in U.S.

Destiny Baker3 years ago

FOX News reports that Michelin has issued a voluntary recall for approximately 1.2 million tires after reports of the tires experiencing tread loss and rapid air loss.

About the Tire Recall

  • The recall affects Michelin LTX M/S tires manufactured between January 2010 and June 2012.
  • The tires are commonly used on pickups, heavy-duty vans, small recreational vehicles and light commercial trucks.
  • The defective tires were sold both as original equipment on some vehicles and new replacement tires.
  • Tread loss and rapid air loss increase the risk of a driver experiencing a blowout, tread separation and hydroplaning all of which would result in an accident.

Defective Tire Statistics

  • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), defective tires lead to approximately 8,000 auto accidents a year.
  • A report by published by Michelin estimated that tire blowouts result in approximately 535 deaths and 23,000 collisions every year.
  • Since the passage of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act in 1996, the U.S. has seen 24 million tires recalled for defects.
