Minneapolis Woman Fatally Injured by Box Truck

Destiny Baker3 years ago

A woman has died after being struck by a box truck near a busy shopping center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

About the Fatal Pedestrian Accident

According to the Star Tribune, the accident occurred at the intersection of W. Lake Street and Market Plaza around 6:18 p.m. Wednesday.

Authorities believe the truck driver, who was traveling southbound on Market Plaza, failed to see the pedestrian as he made a right-hand turn onto Lake Street. He struck the woman and dragged her nearly a quarter of a block.

The woman was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center where she died of her injuries.

Police report that an officer was next to the truck moments before the accident, but never saw the collision. It appears the woman did have the right of way at the time.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

  • The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 4,280 pedestrians lost their lives in traffic accidents in 2010.
  • Another 70,000 pedestrians were injured over the year – equivalent to one pedestrian injury every 8 minutes.
  • The CDC suggests that pedestrians do their best to increase their visibility and cross streets at designated areas as the majority of pedestrian deaths occur at non-intersection locations and at night.
