Mirena IUD Under Increased Scrutiny
Despite growing concern about Mirena's side effects, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommended this week that teens use IUDs (intrauterine devices) and implants to prevent pregnancy.
There has been an increasing number of lawsuits against Bayer Pharmaceuticals’ Mirena IUD, news outlets report. Many of the claims include concern that Bayer understated potential side effects and overstated potential benefits.
Understated Complications, Exaggerated Benefits?
- Although IUDs are more effective than oral contraceptives, some users of the Mirena IUD have had the device move from the uterus into other areas, which negates its contraceptive purpose.
- This movement can also cause side effects such as scarring and damage to the uterus that can affect fertility.
- If an egg is fertilized under these conditions, the risk of an ectopic pregnancy (a very dangerous condition when the embryo attaches itself outside the uterus) increases.
- The device has also been linked to pelvic inflammatory disease, and a strain of the streptococcus bacteria that can cause toxic shock syndrome.
Claims of overblown benefits involve mostly lifestyle claims in advertisements for the IUD including increased intimacy in partnerships and increased confidence. Some users claim that these assertions are unsubstantiated, if not misleading, especially because of potential minor side effects related to the device including acne and bloating.
