An 18-year-old from Mission, Texas was arrested on Thanksgiving Day in connection with a fatal drunk driving accident that left a bicyclist dead.

About the Fatal DWI Accident

Action 4 News reports bicyclist Miguel Gonzalez, 69, was fatally injured last Thursday when he was struck by a Jeep Cherokee driven by 18-year-old Fabian De Leon, Jr. The accident occurred at the intersection of 2nd Street and Conway Avenue shortly after 6:30 pm.

When authorities arrived to the scene, they found Gonzalez injured and bleeding – De Leon allegedly told officers that the bicyclist had “cut in front” of him, leaving him with no way to avoid the collision. Officers, however, noted De Leon appeared intoxicated and took him to the Mission Regional Hospital.

De Leon’s blood alcohol level was recorded at 0.148 and 0.165, well above the legal limit of .08. Upon booking De Leon, officers discovered a baggie of cocaine in De Leon’s wallet.

De Leon is being held on $525,000 in bonds at the Hidalgo County Jail.
