More Than 30 Injured in Arkansas Train Crash

More than 30 people were injured on Thursday when a freight train collided with a passenger train in northwest Arkansas.

About the Arkansas Train Collision

According to Reuters, the accident occurred near Winslow, Arkansas, roughly 130 miles northwest of Little Rock.

The collision left 30 people injured, five critically, and damaged two train engines and four cars. The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management estimates 300 gallons of diesel spilled following the collision.

Two medical hospitals arrived to transport injured passengers to the hospital. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The following information was provided by the Federal Railroad Administration Office of Safety Analysis:

  • In 2013, there were a total of 6,579 train accidents and incidents resulting in 407 deaths and 4,900 non-fatal injuries.
  • This marked an increase from 2012 when 6,433 incidents were recorded resulting in 398 deaths and 4,586 injuries.
  • Common causes of train accidents include:
    • Malfunctioning signals and lights
    • Mechanical malfunction
    • Poor track maintenance
    • Human error
    • Defective parts
