An aid fund has been set up for a mother and son who were involved in an auto accident last Saturday.

Details of the Accident

According to The Huntsville Item, Amber VanRiper, 27, and her son John Bear, 7, were involved in a car accident near Riverside on Saturday. Life Flight transported the victims to Memorial Hermann Hospital where they remain in serious condition.

The Texas Department of Public Safety stated that a Buick passenger car was traveling on FM 980 east of Lakeland Road around 1:40 p.m. Saturday when it was involved in a head-on collision with a Dodge pickup truck.

Amber VanRiper was identified as the Buick’s driver; however, the truck driver still remains unidentified. He was also flown to Memorial Hermann.

Father Among First Responders

According to Aaron VanRiper, the husband and father, his family members are being treated for multiple broken bones. He stated, “my son is doing well” but “My wife had surgery (Sunday) and she was having more surgery (Monday). She is in pretty bad shape right now and we have to wait and see. They are trying to set her femur and she broke her pelvis in five places.”

Mr. VanRiper is the assistant chief at the Thomas Lake Road Volunteer Fire Department. He also stated, “I was actually one of the people who responded to the scene. They said my wife was ejected somehow, so it is a miracle that she didn't suffer any head trauma. If you saw the car, you wouldn't believe they survived. We were lucky.”

Aid Funds Set Up to Aid Family

Mandy Kibby, a friend of the family, is setting up a fundraiser on All help is appreciated. Kibby wrote the following on the website: “Please help this precious family due to excessive medical bills and lack of funds that will come in over the next year. Amber and Bear will both be in wheelchairs leaving Aaron to take care of his family 24/7 in a house full of stairs.”
