Mother Killed, Daughter Critically Injured in New Jersey Accident

According to CBS Local News, a mother was killed and her daughter critically injured while attempting to cross the street Sunday evening in Voorhees, NJ.

Details of the Fatal Accident

Police say the accident happened at approximately 8:21 p.m. Sunday evening at the intersection of Kresson and Evesham Road. Serafina Fel, 63, and her daughter Anna Veksler, 38, were in the process of crossing the street when a Ford Ranger pickup truck struck the women.

Fel was transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. Veksler was also taken to the hospital where she is in extremely critical condition from what are described as life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck did stop and provide police with a statement. Although the accident is under investigation, police believe distracted driving was a factor.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide the following facts and statistics about distracted driving.

  • Each day in the United States, over 9 people are killed and at least 1,060 are injured as a result of distracted driving.
  • In a survey given to drivers between the ages of 18 and 34, 69% reported talking on their cell phone while driving in the previous 30 days.
  • That same survey found 31% of drivers reported having read or sent text or e-mail messages while driving at least once in the previous 30 days.
