Emily Harrigan1 year ago

One man is dead after his motorcycle collided with a tractor-trailer in Prince George’s County on Wednesday.

Detail of the Fatal Motorcycle Accident

According to The Washington Post, the accident occurred Wednesday night around 11:30pm.

The tractor-trailer, which was carrying trash, was traveling southbound along MD 210. Marcus Keith Hines, 29, was riding his motorcycle traveling in the same direction. It is unclear how the two vehicles collided.

Hines was pronounced dead on the scene. The cause of the accident, which shut down the Beltway’s inner loop for almost four hours, remains under investigation.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics

One major problem associated with motorcycle accidents is the stunningly low use of helmets.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), helmet use is “only slightly above 50 percent among motorcyclists killed”.

Only 20 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico require helmet use, 27 states require use for only a specific portion of the population (usually those under the age of 18), and 3 states have no helmet usage requirements for motorcycle riders.

Along with lack of helmet use, speeding is another major factor in crashes involving motorcycles; 60 percent of all motorcycle deaths with speeding as a factor were riders under the age of 30.
