Motorcyclist Arrested After Fleeing Accident

A San Antonio motorcyclists is facing charges a after allegedly leaving his injured passenger in the street as he fled from the scene of an accident.

About the San Antonio Motorcycle Accident

The San Antonio Express-News states the operator of the motorcycle sped away after he and his passenger, an 18-year-old woman, were thrown from the vehicle after the motorcycle lost control and struck a curb.

Witnesses told police that as soon as the driver of the motorcycle stopped rolling, he got up and ran from the scene of the accident. Authorities arrived to the 100 block of SW Loop 410 to find the injured passenger still at the scene.

The passenger was transported to the University Hospital in stable condition. The driver was located a short time later and booked on a charge of failure to stop and render aid.

Neither the driver nor the passenger was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

  • 3,377 people were killed in traffic collisions in Texas in 2013.
  • 495 of those killed were motorcyclists (operators and passengers). 53-percent of those killed were not wearing helmets when the crash occurred.
  • Another 232,041 people were injured in motor vehicle accidents with 89,270 people sustaining serious injuries.
  • Based on reportable crash data for 2013, TxDOT estimates:
    • One person was killed in an auto accident in Texas every 2 hours and 36 minutes
    • One person was injured every 2 minutes and 16 seconds
    • A reportable crash occurred every 71 seconds
