Police say a Pokemon Go player who was playing the popular phone game while driving sideswiped a police cruiser, and the crash was caught by a Baltimore police officer’s body camera.

About the Pokemon Go Crash

The Washington Post reports that early Monday morning, officers were standing on a corner in southeast Baltimore when police say a Toyota RAV-4 hit a cruiser a few feet away. Police say the driver said he was looking down at his phone while playing Pokemon Go and hit the cruiser.

In the video, the driver shows the officer his phone, saying, “That’s what I get for playing this dumb … game.”

T.J. Smith, police spokesman says although charges haven’t been filed, police are working with prosecutors. Smith says no one was hurt, but that players should pay attention to their surroundings while playing the game and to avoid distractions while driving.

Not an Isolated Incident

As Pokemon Go grew in popularity, reports began to surface of players being injured while playing the game – usually due to being distracted and looking down at their phones.

Earlier this month, a fifteen-year-old girl from Pennsylvania was struck by a car while playing Pokemon Go. The teen was hospitalized with a collarbone injury, a foot injury and several cuts and bruises.

According to a spokesperson for the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh UPMC, the fifteen-year-old girl isn’t the first patient they’ve had as a result of the game.
