Natural Grocers Expand Macadamia Nut Recall

Lauren Fernandez1 year ago

Natural Grocers macadamia nuts recalled due to possible health risk has been expanded to include more lots of the product.

About the Recalled Macadamia Nuts

Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets Inc. has recalled additional lots of macadamia nuts from the brand Natural Grocers due to possible health risk. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the macadamia nuts are potentially contaminated with Salmonella.

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause serious illness and sometimes fatal infection, particularly in young children, the elderly, or individuals with a weakened immune system.

The FDA advises that consumers should return the recalled macadamia nuts to the store for credit or a refund.

Health Risk of the Macadamia Nuts

This recall was initiated after the FDA tested a sample of the macadamia nuts and found traces of Salmonella bacteria. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), those infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection.

The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Some infected individuals may require hospitalization. In extreme cases, the Salmonella bacteria can enter the bloodstream and cause arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
