Destiny Baker2 years ago

Authorities have released new details concerning a fatal accident in which a prison bus carrying 15 people was struck by a freight train near Odessa, Texas.

Details of the Fatal Accident

According to Fox News, Texas Department of Criminal Justice bus was traveling on Interstate 20 around 7:30 am Wednesday when it lost control, slid down an overpass embankment, and collided with a freight train.

Two corrections officers and eight prisoners were killed in the accident. They have been identified as officers Christopher Davis, 53, and Eligio Garcia, 45; and inmates Byron Wilson, 34; Tyler Townsend, 29; Jesus Reyna, 44; Kaleb Wise, 22; Adolfo Ruiz, 32; Michael Sewart, 25; Angel Vasquez, 31; and Jeremiah Rodriguez, 35.

Officer Jason Self, 38, was hospitalized in critical condition as were inmates Terry Johnson, 22, and Damien Rodriguez, 22. Inmates Remigio Pineda, 34, and Hector Rivera, 37, were listed in serious condition.

Icy Roads Likely a Contributing Factor

Officials state that icy conditions and a previous accident on the overpass may have contributed to the bus crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Texas Department of Public Safety said on Thursday that they are still sifting through massive amounts of debris as they attempt to reconstruct the accident.

Officials are also scheduled to inspect the railroad to ensure no damage was done.
