A New Jersey trooper that was hit at the scene of an accident has died of his injuries.

Multiple sources are reporting that a New Jersey State trooper who was responding to the scene of an accident along with several fire trucks, police cars, and other emergency crew members was fatally hit by a motorist that was passing by the scene of the accident.

31-year-old Sean Cullen died on Tuesday of severe head injuries.

Cullen was responding to an accident on Interstate 295 in Deptford Township at around 8:15 p.m. on Monday evening. One of the vehicles was ablaze, and several fire trucks and other emergency vehicles had turned on their emergency lights, according to the police.

Officer Cullen was walking near the accident when he was hit by a passing vehicle. Officer Cullen was airlifted to the Cooper University Hospital in Camden with severe head injuries. A vigil was held at the hospital by friends, family members, and fellow troopers.

The 22-year-old woman who hit Officer Cullen is fully cooperating with the investigators, and no charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.
