The metal-on-metal saga, commonly known with the DePuy brand, continues as Wright Medical Group Inc. has now been subpoenaed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Tennessee.

About the Wright Profemur Suit

On August 3, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Tennessee sent a subpoena to Wright Medical Group Inc.  The subpoena requests records and documentation relating to the PROFEMUR series of hip implant devices spanning from January 1, 2000 to August 2, 2012.

However, Wright Medical claims that the subpoena is not related to allegations of wrongdoing. Furthermore, in response to the subpoena and the recent recall of Stryker’s metal hip implants, Wright Medical’s report says, “Although Stryker's recalled modular hip stems differ in design and material from our Profemur modular neck hip stems, there is a risk that Stryker's recall and the resultant publicity could negatively impact sales of modular neck systems of other manufacturers, including our Profemur system, even if the issues cited by Stryker are unique to Stryker products.”

Risks Associated With Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants

Metal-on-metal hip implant parts can grind together and shed particles of the metal into the patient’s body. These metal nano-particles can cause side effects such as pain, dislocation of the hip joint, inflammation, growth of non-cancerous pseudo tumors, and more. In some cases, the metal particles can enter the bloodstream and cause metal poisoning problems.
