New York authorities are investigating a bus accident which left at least 10 people injured.

Details of the Bus Accident

According to CBS2, the accident happened close to 4:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon along the access road to the FDR Drive at 34th Street. Out of the 10 passengers on the bus, three people were taken to the hospital and nine complained of having pain.

Preliminary reports suggest the accident happened when a QM11 bus was leaving Manhattan for Queens along with 10 passengers onboard the bus.

The bus somehow got off the access road, came unto the concrete divider, and came in contact with the support column which holds the express way overhead. The right front tire made its way up 2 ½ feet off the ground.

FDNY Battalion Chief Mark Rosenbaum stated to WCBS 880’S John Metaxas, “the driver had impacted the support for the FDR Drive, and it came to rest on top of like a two-foot barricade.”

Photos taken at the scene made it seem as though the bus rode straight up the concrete divider.

Jenny Lee, a passenger on that bus stated, “the bus started shaking and then you know, it just it, and it just stopped.”

Passengers Trapped in Bus Following Accident

The passengers were stuck inside the bus due to the door not being able to open until firefighters arrived at the scene. They had to work diligently on getting the door off and get the ladder to help the passengers off the bus safely.

The bus driver did apologize to the passengers that were on the bus passenger. A woman who saw the bus driver said he might have looked a little embarrassed about what happened.

The accident is being investigated on whether or not the driver may have been distracted or for any other reason.

The 46-year-old driver had an injury to his hand and was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center along with a male passenger, 63, and a female passenger ,56, but both are believed to have only minor injuries.

The 40,000-pound bus was taken away by a heavy-duty tow truck
