NHTSA Approves of Chrysler Recall Solution

Destiny Baker3 years ago

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that they are satisfied with the action being taken by Chrysler in a recall that affects 1.6 million Jeep vehicles.

About the Chrysler Jeep Recall

• The recall concerned Jeep Liberty models (2002-2007) and Jeep Grand Cherokee models (1993-1998) that were found to be prone to fire hazards in the event of rear collision or rollover.
• The issue was brought to the NHTSA’s attention after investigations showed 161 deaths in 115 accidents were tied to fires from damaged gas tanks.
• The investigation concluded that the gas tanks on the vehicles were situated in such a way the that, upon collision, the trailer hitch could be pushed into the gas tank causing resulting in fire hazards.

Chrysler's Controversial Solution

• Chrysler originally refused to conduct a recall when notified by the NHTSA.
• They later offered a compromise by stating they would inspect vehicles, and install new trailer hitches to the vehicles to protect the gas tank.
• Originally, Chrysler reported they would only replace after-market trailer hitches and the recall would not apply to those vehicles with factory trailer hitches or those without any trailer hitch; however, according to the release by the NHTSA, all recalled models will be inspected by Chrysler to determine if a new hitch is necessary
