NHTSA Considers Expanding Takata Air Bag Recall

Alexandrea Messner1 year ago

Acording to the Insurance Journal, Takata Corp. air bag recall may be expanded to seven manufacturers by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

About the Possible Expansion

The seven companies that may be included Volkswagen, Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Land Rover, Suzuki Motor Corp., Volvo Trucks, and Spartan Motors Inc.

According to NHTSA, all seven of these companies were supplied with air bag infiltrators that use ammonium nitrate propellant. The propellant appears to be one of the many factors leading to air bag ruptures. The ruptures have been linked to at least eight deaths and 130 injuries.

NHTSA contacted the seven manufacturers after being told by Takata that they had continued to supply these companies with ammonium nitrate air bags. The agency wanted to know if the manufacturers were contemplating service actions and the challenges the manufacturers would face if NHTSA expanded the recall.

NHTSA has confirmed that the cause of the air bag failures is age, prolonged exposure to high humidity and moisture, which altered the chemical makeup of the ammonium nitrate inflator propellant. NHTSA will hold a public hearing this fall to present their findings and announce how it plans to proceed.
