North Carolina Man Killed in Collision with Military Truck

Tina Robinson3 years ago

According to the Jacksonville Daily News, 20-year-old Christian Javier Garcia was killed on Monday when his car slammed into the back of a military truck and trailer attempting to make a U-turn on U.S. 70.

Details of the Fatal Collision

Police say the accident happened around 8:15 p.m. on Monday evening on U.S. 70 at Chatham St., east of Newport, NC. A military truck identified as an Oshkosh MK27 and trailer was being driven by 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Marine Joshua Lowry. Reports say Lowry missed his turn and was attempting a U-turn. Lowry is stationed at nearby New River airbase.

Authorities said the 45-foot vehicle was too long to perform the maneuver, and Lowry had backed up into the eastbound lane when a 2005 Saturn driven by Garcia struck the trailer. Garcia’s vehicle was “impaled” under the truck. Heavy rains and lightning made it difficult for workers to free Garcia.

No injuries to Lowry were reported. Newport police told reporters it is working with the District Attorney and military officials to determine if Lowry will face charges.

Large Truck Accident Statistics

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates 3,291 fatalities and 104,000 injuries in crashes involving large trucks in 2012. Data showed that large trucks were three times more likely than other vehicles to be struck in the rear in two-vehicle crashes. The majority (64%) of fatal crashes involving large trucks occurred during the daytime.
