Oahu Man Hit and Killed by Alleged Drunk Driver

A woman has been arrested in connection with a fatal pedestrian accident that happened on Sunday.

Details about the Fatal Pedestrian Accident

The Honolulu Star Advertiser is reporting that a 22-year-old woman from Ewa Beach was arrested but released in the overnight hours on Sunday after her vehicle allegedly hit and killed a former Kamehameha Schools varsity football player in Nanakuli.

According to police, the woman was arrested about a half-mile from where the accident happened along Farrington Highway for investigation of driving under the influence of an intoxicant and fleeing the scene of a fatal accident. She was then released from custody during the overnight hours.

Kaulana Werner was killed in the accident after suffering from multiple blunt force trauma, according to the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office. His deaths was originally ruled an accident.

Police stated that Werner was crossing the Farrington Highway on foot when he was hit by a vehicle being driven by the woman who was heading toward town. Both excessive speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the accident.

According to the Honolulu Civil Beat, there are at least a dozen wrongful deaths from pedestrian accidents that happen in Honolulu every year in the United States:

  • From 2007-2001, there were a total of 524 pedestrian accidents on the island of Oahu.
  • 90% of those accidents during those years proved to have been fatal.
  • Interestingly, 80 percent of the pedestrian fatalities that happened from 2007-2011 involved people 65 and over.
