An off duty Texas deputy died after being injured in auto accident.

About the Fatal Texas Auto Accident

According to the Star Telegram, Deputy James Murray was off-duty when he was injured in the car accident on Friday near the Navarro-Freestone County line on U.S. Highway 287.

Murray was taken to Navarro Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Murray was a 22-year veteran of the Navarro County Sheriff’s office.

Sheriff Elmer Tanner said his agency “is in shock over Deputy Murray’s death. Our heart goes out to the family of our fallen comrade.”

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash.

  • 3,534 people were killed in auto accidents in 2014, marking a 3.7-percent increase from the 3,408 deaths reported in 2013.

  • 237,941 people were injured in auto accidents in 2014 with 17,152 sustaining incapacitating injuries.
  • It is estimated by TxDOT that a reportable crash occurred every 66 seconds in 2014.
