Officials Investigate Fatal Gravel Truck Accident

Officials have opened an investigation into a fatal accident in which a gravel truck overturned on top of a car in Pleasant Hill, California, but warn that it may be months before the investigation is complete.

Pleasant Hill Mother Killed in Trucking Accident

According to KTVU, 32-year-old Lindsey Combs, 32, was killed when a gravel truck overturned onto her car Monday afternoon. The incident occurred around 1 pm near the corner of Pine Street and Shell Avenue.

Combs was engaged to be married and had a 4-year-old daughter. She was also two months pregnant.

Reports indicate that an employee of JJR Construction, a subcontractor working on a city project, had asked Combs to move her car. As she did, a truck filled with gravel overturned, landing on top of Comb’s vehicle.

OSHA has joined investigations of the accident.

Trucking Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • 3,921 people were killed in trucking accidents in 2012, a 4-percent increase from the 3,781 deaths recorded in 2011.
  • Of those killed in trucking accidents:
    • 697 were occupants of large trucks
    • 2,843 were occupants of other vehicles
    • 381 were non-occupants including pedestrians and bicyclists
  • An additional 104,000 people were injured trucking accidents, a 18-percent increase over 2011 when 88,000 injuries were recorded.
