Details about the Accident Involving the Athlete

Multiple sources are reporting that a volleyball player from the University of Mississippi, 23-year-old Ty Laporte, was killed in a two-vehicle accident just a few miles south of the Tennessee state line.

According to Mississippi Highway Patrol Master Sergeant Ray Hall, Laporte was pronounced dead Thursday evening in Benton County, Mississippi about 50 miles north of Oxford.

Hall says that it appears that Laporte pulled out into the path of an 18-wheeler that was being driven by 63-year-old Rickey Kirkpatrick from Rainsville, Alabama. The accident happened at the intersection of Mississippi Highway 7 and US Highway 72.

The circumstances of the accident remain under investigation and, as of right now, no charges have been filed against the driver of the 18-wheeler or anyone else.
