One Dead in Wilkes County Construction Accident

A man was killed in a construction accident in Wilkes County, North Carolina on Tuesday morning, August 26.

About the Wilkes County Construction Accident

According to FOX 8 WGHP, an Elon County man was killed in a construction accident last Tuesday. The victim was identified as David Eugene Alcon of Elon North Carolina.  He was 38 years of age.

The accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. when a cinder block retainer wall collapsed, causing an asphalt milling machine to flip over onto David Alcon.  The retainer wall was located on the north side of Pine View Baptist Church.

FOX 8 News also reported that Alcon was directing the driver of the asphalt milling machine to where it needed to be positioned when the wall collapsed.

Alcon is believed to have been killed instantly in the accident. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be investigating Alcon’s death.

Construction Fatality Statistics

The following information is provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):

  • 4,628 workers were killed on the job in 2012.  This averages to approximately 89 deaths a week.
  • Fatal work injuries involving contractors accounted for 15 percent of all fatal work injuries in 2012.
  • Fatalities in the construction industry were most often due to falls, being struck by an object, electrocutions, or being caught in between an object.
