One Dead, One Injured in Power Line Accident in Minnesota

On Monday, July 28, one worker was killed and another injured after a transmission line construction accident in Minnesota, according to KTTC News.

About the Fatal Construction Accident

According to Minnesota authorities, two men were electrocuted in the CapX2020 power line construction site near Fairfax, Minn. Both men were working for Donovan Construction of Ham Lake on a 250-mile line that will run from South Dakota to Hampton, Minn. when the accident happened. The workers were taken to trauma centers in the Twin Cities where one worker was pronounced dead. The second worker is currently being treated in the HCMC burn unit. Minnesota OSHA and the Renville County sheriff's office are investigating the accident. 

Construction Fatality Statistics

The following statistics are provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

  • In 2012, there were 849 fatalities
  • Between 2011 and 2012, there was a 15% increase in construction worker fatalities. 
  • In 2012, about 18% of workers involved in construction suffered on the job injuries. 
  • In 2012, 12% of the total labor injuries were caused by a falling object.
