One Fatality in Construction Zone Accident

An auto accident left one person dead and two injured as an SUV ran into construction equipment and two workers early Wednesday morning.

Details of the Construction Accident

According to the New Jersey Herald, one worker was killed and another injured when an SUV crashed into the back of their construction equipment around 1:19 a.m.

The workers were repairing a bridge on the Garden State Parkway in Aberdeen, New Jersey.

Police say 21-year-old Marc Senatore was driving in the center lane when he entered the right lane and hit the construction equipment.  The equipment struck the workers and another vehicle, a pickup truck.

One of the workers, Cesar Desouza-Caetano was pronounced dead at the scene.  

His co-worker William Heise was taken to a nearby hospital along with Marc Senatore.  It has not been released how serious their injuries are.

The following information is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • From 1994 to 1999, there were 778 fatalities in work zones.
  • From 2000 to 2006, the average number of fatalities was 1,060.
  • From 2007 to 2012, fatalities reached 669.
  • Texas, California, and Florida were ranked as the states with the most motor vehicle crash fatalities in construction and maintenance work zones in 2012.
