One Injured, One Dead in Construction Zone Crash

One man died and another was injured Wednesday afternoon when a car barreled into a construction site.

About the West, Texas Accident

The Waco Tribune-Herald reports that a man drove into a work zone near West, Texas around 3:00 pm Wednesday. The accident occured near mile marker 353 of northbound Interstate 35.

The driver of the vehicle was Frank Cdebaca, 73.  He was driving a 2009 Dodge Ram on the service road when he drove off the roadway and into the work site.  

The driver struck a piece of construction equipment and injured a Webber Construction workerFrank Cdebaca was declared dead at the scene.

The Webber Construction worker he hit was sent to a nearby medical center with cuts and bruises.  The worker was identified as Manuel Hernandez, 19, of Waco.

It is currently unclear why he ran off the roadway.

Work Zone Crash Statistics

The following information is from the U.S. Department of Transportation:

  • There were a total of 87,606 crashes in work zones in 2010.
  • Most crashes in work zones are not fatal: 0.6 percent were fatal crashes, 30 percent were injury crashes and 69 percent were property damage only.
  • The majority of work zone crashes were reported to have occurred during day time hours rather than the night.
