One Killed, Five Injured in Whittier Drunk Driving Accident

The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident in which a 14-year-old girl was killed has been arrested.

Details about the Fatal Accident Involving the Child

NBC Los Angeles is reporting that a 14-year-old student from La Serna High School was killed in a rollover accident and four others were injured on Tuesday near the campus in Whittier. The driver of the vehicle was arrested, according to the Whittier Police Department.

The coroner’s office from Los Angeles County identified the student who was killed as Ivette Macias, who was just shy of her 15th birthday.

The SUV, which was carrying six people, crashed at about 11:30 a.m. on the 8400 block of Villaverde Drive, according to Whittier police officer John Scoggins. A witness of the accident called 911 and says that he heard girls screaming, two of the passengers in the car were unconscious, and one of the passengers was ejected from the vehicle.

According to police, the girl was killed in the accident and the other five people in the vehicle were injured when the driver of the SUV lost control and veered onto a sidewalk, colliding with a large mailbox.

The driver of the SUV has been identified as 19-year-old Daniel Vaquez, of Whittier, and has been booked on felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
