One Killed, Four Students Injured in School Bus Accident in New Jersey

One person is dead and another four students are injured after a vehicle collided with a school bus in New Jersey.

Details about the Fatal Accident Involving the School Bus

The Daily Journal is reporting that the driver of a vehicle that hit a school bus carrying six people has died on Thursday morning. The identity of the driver was release by the New Jersey State Police as 43-year-old Larry Waller of Bridgeton.

The accident happened at about 7:42 a.m. on Route 48 near Burlington Road just outside Bridgeton. The school bus was transporting four Bridgeton students to a private school in eastern Cumberland County and was being operated by the Kerry Bus Company in Vineland.

The driver of the car who hit the bus was driving a Toyota RAV4 heading west toward Bridgeton. A preliminary investigation has indicated that Waller had crosses Route 49 over the center line and hit the bus which was being driven by 48-year-old Osheia Wallace of Bridgeton. The bus was run off the eastern road shoulder where it then overturned.

The New Jersey State Police has reported that Waller was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

According to Bridgeton Schools Superintendent Thomasina Jones, the driver and four students ages 11-17 were taken to Vineland hospital. A bus aide, 82-year-old Vera Cole, was taken to the Cooper University Hospital in critical but stable condition.

As of Thursday afternoon, all four students in the bus had been discharged from the hospital.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • From 2003-2012, there were a total of 174 fatalities of school-age children who had died in school-transportation-related accidents.
  • Impacts to the front of school transportation vehicles occurred in 49 percent of accidents involving school transportation vehicles.
  • From 2003-2012, of the 106 occupants that were killed in school-transportation vehicles, 46 were the drivers and the other 60 were passengers at the time of the accident.
