One Person Dead at Springfield Landfill

A city worker died in an accident at the Springfield Landfill on Wednesday morning.

Details about the Landfill Accident

The Springfield News-Leader is reporting that, according to city officials, a maintenance worker for the city died on Wednesday morning in an industrial accident at the Springfield Landfill.

The victim, who has been identified as 53-year-old John Choate, was airlifted to the Mercy Hospital in Springfield just after 11 in the morning on Wednesday, but he later died that afternoon at the hospital.

In a press release from the city, it is stated that the Springfield Police Department is currently conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the accident and will release more information as it becomes available. Officials have not given any word on how exactly Choate was killed.

The Department of Environmental Services that oversees the landfill will conduct an internal review of the accident as well.

The landfill was closed the rest of the day on Wednesday, and is expected to reopen Thursday morning.
