Over a Dozen Individuals Injured in School Bus and Ambulance Collision

On Sunday, January 9th, 2014, a school bus filled with students returning home from after school activities collided with an ambulance causing injuries to the passengers of the bus as well as the EMTs.

Details of the Brooklyn Ambulance-School Bus Crash

  • The accident happened in Brooklyn, NY at the intersection of Fort Hamilton Parkway and 51st Street.
  • The FDNY ambulance was on its way to answer an emergency call for an emotionally disturbed person.
  • There were eighteen teenage male students on the Yeshiva Machzka Hadas bus, returning from an after school activity.
  • The teenagers as well as the EMTs were taken to Lutheran and Maimonides Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
  • It is suspected that the snowy weather and the wet roads may have played a part in the collision; however, the matter is still being investigated.

  • The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) reported 242 fatal bus accidents, 13,000 bus accidents involving injuries, and 43,000 bus accidents that only had property damage in the year 2011.
  • 283 people died in bus accidents and 24,000 were injured that year.
  • The fatal commercial motor vehicle (CMV) crashes of 2011 cost $39 billion (measured according to the 2012 dollar rate).
  • CMV crashes involving injuries cost $32 billion and CMV accidents involving only property damage cost $16 billion in that same year.
