A man was killed in Elgin, Illinois Tuesday evening after his vehicle was struck by another driver attempting to evade arrest.

About the Fatal Elgin Accident

The Daily Herald reports that the suspect, Steven Luellen, 34, was stopped by Elgin police around 5 pm Tuesday. The man, wanted for a state parole violation involving a previous evading arrest conviction, then fled the scene at a high rate of speed, running red lights and stop signs. Police did not continue their pursuit.

The suspect made it about four blocks before his white 2011 Nissan Maxima crashed into a blue Mazda MPV minivan at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Liberty Street. The driver of the minivan, 40, was fatally injured and pronounced dead shortly after arriving to Sherman Hospital – his name has not been released.

Luellen suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and his passenger, a 35-year-old female, is listed in critical condition. Elgin Police Commander Glenn Theriault confirmed that charges are pending for Luellen and that Luellen’s passenger will likely face charges as well.
