Pedestrian Accidents Account for Rising Percent of Traffic Fatalities

Destiny Baker3 years ago

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrian fatalities do not seem to be following the downward trend that has been seen in the rest of road related deaths.

Trends in Road Related Deaths

• From 2002 to 2011, the U.S. has seen a steady decrease in the number of road related injuries and road related deaths.
Pedestrian accidents, however, is one of the few categories that are not in line with this downward trend.
• According to a release by the NHTSA, pedestrian deaths accounted for 14 percent of all traffic related fatalities in 2011.
• This number is up 3 percent from the 11 percent that was recorded from 2002 to 2007.
• The NHTSA now expects at least one pedestrian traffic injury every 8 minutes and one pedestrian death every 2 hours this year.
