A man is dead following a fatal hit-and-run along Highway 181 in Corpus Christi, Texas on Saturday.

About the Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident

According to KRIS-TV, 42-year-old Leonardo Ortiz Juarez was walking along Highway 181 near North Beach when he was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver early Saturday morning.

Emergency lines initially received reports of debris on the road; however, calls from witnesses soon became frantic after it was determined that the debris was actually a body.

A Corpus Christi police officer later found a damaged Volkswagen Beetle on the side of the road which was then traced back to the owner, 52-year-old Tamy Shobar.

Shobar has been arrested for causing an accident involving serious injury or death. She has at least one prior conviction for driving while intoxicated in addition to a conviction for leaving the scene of an accident.

  • 481 of those killed in traffic accidents in 2012 were pedestrians, this marks a 13.2 percent increase from 2011.
  • Alcohol was determined to be a factor in 1,099 of the deaths recorded in 2012 – 32.3 percent of the total number of traffic related deaths recorded for the year.
  • Using available data, the Texas DOT was able to determine that:
    • One person was killed in a traffic accident every 2 hours and 35 minutes.
    • One person was injured every 2 minutes and 17 seconds.
    • A reportable crash occurred every 75 second.
