A man is dead following a pedestrian accident in Orlando on Thursday.

About the Fatal Pedestrian Accident

According to a local Orlando, Florida news source, a pedestrian was struck and killed 11:45 pm Thursday on State Road 50 near Pebble Beach Drive in Orlando.

The Honda Civic involved in the accident was going eastward on S.R. 50 when the accident occurred. The pedestrian did not use a crosswalk. After crashing into the vehicle’s windshield, a Toyota Camry ran over the body.

The victim was not identified; however, the man was described as a middle-aged Caucasian man. Witnesses stated they saw groceries on the road.

Information provided by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and the National Highway Traffic Administraton (NHTSA):

  • In 2010, 4,280 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States, and another 70,000 pedestrians were injured.
  • Pedestrians ages 65 and older accounted for 19% of all pedestrian deaths and an estimated 11% of all pedestrians injured in 2010
  • In 2011, 4,432 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 69,000 were injured in traffic crashes in the United States. On average, a pedestrian was killed every two hours and injured every eight minutes in traffic crashes.
  • In 2011, almost three-fourths (73%) of pedestrian fatalities occurred in an urban setting versus a rural setting.
  •  Over two-thirds (70%) of pedestrian fatalities occurred at non-intersections versus at intersections.
  •  Eighty-eight percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred during normal weather conditions (clear/cloudy), compared to rain, snow and foggy conditions.
  •  A majority of the pedestrian fatalities, 70 percent, occurred during the nighttime (6 pm – 5:59 am).
