Taxotere Linked to Permanent Hair Loss

As the most prescribed drug in its class, Taxotere was used to treat a large number of breast cancer patients in the United States. Studies have linked the popular chemotherapy drug to permanent hair loss – or alopecia – in some women who received the drug as part of their cancer treatment. These women are filing lawsuits alleging Sanofi-Aventis, the manufacturer and marketer of Taxotere, failed to warn them of the side effects.

Taxotere is a chemotherapy drug that doctors prescribe to treat the majority of breast cancer cases in the United States. Taxotere is the most prescribed drug in its class and made Sanofi over $3 billion in 2009.

In some cases, 9 percent of breast cancer patients suffered from alopecia that lasted for a decade or more. These patients faced a decrease in quality of life, a negative affect on their body image, depression, and distress. Hair loss ranks as one of the most distressing side effects of chemotherapy cancer treatment.

Breast cancer survivors across the United States are filing lawsuits claiming Sanofi not only failed to warn patients of the risk of permanent hair loss but that they hid research that linked Taxotere to the toxic side effects.

Many lawsuits have been filed against Sanofi-Aventis regarding Taxotere, claiming numerous legal actions against the company, including:

  • Selling the drug without properly testing it.
  • Failing to determine if the drug was safe.
  • Selling the drug without disclosing the risks.
  • Failing to properly warn patients and health care providers.
  • Misleading the public in advertising and marketing.
  • Manufacturing a dangerous drug.
  • Concealing information from the public.
  • Downplaying the dangers associated with the drug.

Lawsuits also claim that Sanofi-Aventis falsely assured the public that hair growth would resume after chemotherapy and that the company should have revealed that Taxotere had a higher rate of permanent hair loss than similar chemotherapy drugs.
