Alisporivir Clinical Trials

Pancreatitis in Alisporivir Clinical Trials

Thomas J. Henry is currently investigating cases of pancreatitis linked to clinical drug trials for the experimental hepatitis C drug alisporivir, previously developed under the name DEB-025 by Debiopharm.

ALISPORIVIR DRUG TRIAL PLACED ON HOLD

In April 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ordered that Novartis put a clinical trial for their hepatitis C drug alisporivir on hold following multiple reports of pancreatitis occurring over only a few months.

The drug trial was testing alisporivir in combination with standard hepatitis C treatments pegylated interferon (PI) and ribarivin. It is suspected that the cases of pancreatitis occurred due to an interaction between alisporivir and these traditional treatments.

Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas which results in severe abdominal pains, nausea, and vomiting. The condition requires immediate medical attention and can result in internal bleeding and death.
