DANGEROUS ANTIFUNGAL DRUG PUTS PREGNANT WOMEN AT RISK
Diflucan (fluconazole) is an antifungal medication prescribed to treat several different types of fungal infections. Fluconazole is administered by mouth or intravenously. The drug was approved for market use in 1988 and is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines.
Common side effects of diflucan include:
- Stomach discomfort or upset
- Change in taste or bad, unusual, or unpleasant taste
- Acid or sour stomach
STUDY LINKS DIFLUCAN WITH MISCARRIAGES IN PREGNANT WOMEN
In 2016, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that they would evaluate the results of a Danish study that concluded a link between an increased risk of miscarriage and the use of oral fluconazole. In this study, the reported oral fluconazole usage was one or two doses of 150 mg. The current FDA label states that there does not appear to be any risks to pregnant women who are exposed to this amount of the drug.
LONG-TERM, HIGH-DOSE USE OF FLUCONAZOLE MAY CAUSE BIRTH DEFECTS
In 2011, the FDA informed the public that fluconazole may be associated with a rare and distinct set of birth defects in newborns whose mothers received treatment during the first trimester of pregnancy. When taken chronically at high doses (400-800 mg/day) to treat vaginal candidiasis (vaginal yeast infection), infants may develop the following birth defects:
- Short, broad head
- Abnormal looking face
- Abnormal development of the skullcap
- Oral cleft
- Bowing of the thigh bones
- Thin ribs and long bones
- Muscle weakness and joint deformities
- Congenital heart disease
The risk does not appear to be associated with lower doses of the drug (150 mg) to treat vaginal yeast infection.
