Five bicyclists were killed last week when a man drove into a group of cyclists in Cooper Township.

Overview of the Tragic Accident

A 50-year-old man was driving a pickup truck Tuesday evening in Cooper Township Michigan when his vehicle came in contact with a group of bicyclists. The accident left five bicyclists killed and four injured.

The bicyclists were riding as a group at the time, and consisted of men and women but no children. Witnesses say that the man was driving erratically just before the accident, and tried to flee from the scene before being caught by the police sometime after.

The driver of the truck is in custody of the police but has not yet been charged. The names of the victims and suspect have not yet been released.

Bicycle Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • In 2013 in the U.S., over 900 bicyclists were killed and there were an estimated 494,000 emergency department visits due to bicycle-related injuries.
  • Data from 2010 show fatal and non-fatal crash-related injuries to bicyclists resulted in lifetime medical costs and productivity losses of $10 billion.
