A pilot was critically injured in a helicopter crash in Texas.

Details about the Helicopter Crash

Multiple sources are reporting that, according to officials, a crop-dusting helicopter clipped a power line and crashed in an accident that happened in South Texas on Thursday that left the pilot of the aircraft critically injured.

On Friday, federal investigators are expected to arrive to inspect the crash site that is near Los Fresnos, which is about 10 miles north of Brownsville.

Gene Daniels, Chief of the Los Fresnos Fire Department further indicated that the helicopter hit a power line on Thursday before it crashed into a field. Chief Daniels stated that the pilot of the helicopter suffered critical burns.

The pilot was transported to a hospital in San Antonio to be treated for his injuries. At this time, the name of the pilot and details on his condition in the hospital have not been released.

Important Information about Helicopter Accidents

According to an article in Slate, there are dozens of wrongful deaths of people involved in helicopter crashes every year in the United States. The article also gives a few reasons as to why helicopters have a higher crash rate than small planes:

  • Helicopters are used for riskier operations – they can land in places that airplanes cannot, making landing conditions unpredictable.
  • Helicopters generally have more moving parts than airplanes.
  •  For beginning pilots, helicopters are trickier to handle than airplanes.
