Police Investigate Tree-Trimmer’s Death

susan_harr5 years ago

Police are still investigating the death of a California man who was run over on the job last Thursday (August 4, 2011) by a “bucket” truck used for tree-trimming. The man was part of a two-person tree-trimming team working in a Santa Barbara neighborhood that day. Neither person was in the truck when the accident occurred- the crew’s second member was trying to disconnect a chipper-shredder trailer from the back of the truck when it began to roll down the hill. Police are still trying to figure out what caused the truck to propel forward, unmanned.

Landscape and Horticultural Services Accidents

Struck-by accidents in the landscape industry are not uncommon. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), most struck-by accidents occur when a worker is walking around a motor vehicle or is struck by a falling object.

  • From 1995-2000 there were an average of 13,025 Landscape/ Horticultural Services accidents every year
  • In 2003 there were 11,500 injuries
  • 23% of these injuries were a result of “struck-by” accidents
  • 10% of these injuries involved a motor vehicle
