Police Investigating Freer Trucking Accident

Authorities are investigating a fatal trucking accident along Highway 44 near Freer that left one man dead on Saturday.

Details of the Freer Trucking Accident

According to the Alice Echo News, Ricardo Anthony Figueroa, 23, was killed when an 18-wheeler veered into oncoming traffic and collided with his vehicle, head-on.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, Romeo Perez Lopez, 65, had to be extracted from his vehicle and was airlifted to San Antonio Brooks Medical Hospital with critical injuries.

Authorities have not yet determined why Lopez crossed the median, and DPS is continuing their investigation.

Trucking Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • 3,921 people were killed in trucking accidents in 2012 – a 4 percent increase from the 3,781 recorded in 2011.
  • An additional 104,000 were injured in traffic accidents, up 18 percent from 88,000 in 2012.
  • Of those killed in trucking accidents:
    • 697 were occupants of large trucks.
    • 2,843 were occupants of other vehicles.
    • 381 were non-occupants such as pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Texas had 543 large trucks involved in traffic accidents – more than any other state.
