Pool and Spa Safety for Children

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is launching its annual pool safety campaign as a response to pool and spa related injuries and deaths in children. The CPSC warns against preventable death and injuries caused by poor adult supervision, children’s inability to swim, and entrapment hazards in and around the pool.

Children at Risk

  • Children under the age of five
  • Children with access to in-ground home pools
  • Children who do not know how to swim

Pool and Spa Injury Statistics

  • 2007-2009: An average of 390 children younger than 15 drowned from pool or spa related injuries.
  • 2009-2011: An average of 5,200 children younger than 15 were treated by paramedics for pool or spa-related injuries.
  • 2011: So, far seven pool incidents/injuries caused by entrapment hazards have been reported to the CPSC.

  • Ensure that children have been taught to swim before allowing them in the pool.
  • Be watchful and alert when children are in or around pools and spas.
  • Keep children away from entrapment hazards such as pool drains or pipes.
  • Keep a phone close by pool and spa areas in case of an emergency.
